Common Questions
What is a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)?
MFTs are master level graduates who upon completion of formal training, have practiced a minimum of 500 hours of direct therapy, and countless hours of rigorous supervision. MFTs acquire extensive training in working relationally with couples and families, as well as individuals with a wide variety of presenting concerns. MFTs integrate research and theory into practice and demonstrate an understanding of and appreciation for diversity. Marriage and Family Therapists are bound by a professional Code of Ethics through the Canadian Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.
Are your services covered by insurance?
Many insurance providers in Manitoba do cover counselling/therapy services. Please check with your insurance plan to determine if you have coverage and what designation your therapist must have in order to be covered. Please note we do not provide direct billing to insurance providers. I am a Manitoba Blue Cross provider and will provide a letter advocating for coverage to other providers by request.
How long does therapy last?
Personal sessions are scheduled for 50 minutes, couple/relationship sessions for 80 minutes. The number of times we meet will be up to you! Therapy can be helpful when we find ourselves needing more intentional time to move through a specific problem or towards a goal, and sometimes therapy is helpful for maintaining wellness. We will work together to establish a schedule and pace that works best for you.
Do you see individuals or couples with _______________?
I have a broad range of knowledge and clinical experience, and yet I also believe you have the best knowledge of your unique situation. That's where I start and continue to be mindful of while working together. I work collaboratively with you, using both experience and relevant research to support you in the goals you have and the challenges you are facing. If you have a specific question, please reach out by email. LGBTQ friendly.
Do I need a physician referral?
No - while your doctor may recommend counselling as part of your treatment plan, clients are self-referred. You can reach out to me directly either by phone or email.
